SURREY, BC –January 1, 2019 – Members of the Fraser Valley Real Estate Board have donated $5,000 to the SOS Children’s Village BC, a proven charity of longstanding local and international reputation supporting children.
Among its programs, SOS Children’s Village provides transitional housing for foster children who are aging out of care in our province. Many of these children do not have the care and support of families of their own, and often end up at risk and homeless, because as they become young adults, they can no longer rely on the government to care for them.
With transitional housing programs delivered by the SOS Children’s Villages, these young people can begin working toward their own independent housing the day they turn 19, and become legal adults, prepared to begin the journey of adulthood, safely and independently.
The work of the SOS Children’s Village youth housing programs epitomizes the principles for charitable donations, long established by the Fraser Valley Real Estate Board, whose focus is on shelter-related programs supporting the provision, creation, or modification of temporary or permanent human shelter and Quality of Life principles.
The FVREB donation will be directed to the Transition to Adulthood Service (TTA) and Youth Year Intensive Housing programs.
“There’s no question that housing is a critical necessity for a safe and productive life,” said John Barbisan, President of the Fraser Valley Real Estate. “No young person should have to resort to homelessness just as they are entering adulthood. Having personally visited and met with staff, I am very pleased that the REALTORS® of the Fraser Valley are able to offer funding support to these two worthy programs.”
“We are thrilled to be awarded this grant to our Transition to Adulthood program from the Fraser Valley Real Estate Board in recognition of our commitment to improving housing and life skills support for kids aging out of care,” said Douglas Dunn, Executive Director of SOS Children’s Village BC. “This is a substantial assist to our ability to expand our reach to more youth, and we extend our gratitude to every REALTOR in the FVREB.”
